Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that gives financial support to those in the construction industry who endured life-altering injuries. Every year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a major stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and the experience left his left leg majorly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would eventually be confined to a wheelchair.

No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, resulting in financial strain on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help a person in Adil’s situation walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they could not afford the equipment in addition to the intensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.

Thankfully, an employee at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
